A Bad Day Does Not a Bad Couponer Make!

25 May

The last few days have been rough for me, coupon-wise.

It started with a shopping trip, in which I not only saved less than my usual amount (only 43% for me this time around…) but in which I also got a lot of flack from the cashier & her managers about using “too many coupons”. Keep in mind, this was at a big box, major retailer, that does NOT limit coupon usage in their corporate policy, and also had signs everywhere about how coupon-friendly they are. I’ll let you guess which store i’m talking about…

Then, I went to my local Kroger where I was told they were putting some of their hair care items on clearance. By the time I arrived, they only had a few damaged boxes of blue-black hair dye, which I could have gotten for free with coupons, but why bother? Who do I even KNOW who dyes their hair blue-black? So I left it there for someone else, bummed that I’d missed the other items.

And finally, I headed to my favorite drugstore, after hearing they were putting many of their makeup items on sale. I went, with a list, a plan for early holiday shopping, and my binder fully stocked. Ten minutes later, I was on my way back home, after being told the items weren’t marked down just yet. So I felt like I’d really wasted my time, considering I had to pack my daughter up & take her along. Very frustrating.

All in all, just a few “off days” in my couponing routine. Not the end of the world, but very discouraging.

However, I like to share this with people, because I want others to know – if you have a bad day or two, it doesn’t mean you don’t know what you’re doing or that you’re not good at it. Sometimes a sale changes, or doesn’t exist at your store. Sometimes items sell out (very common at my local stores!). And sometimes, store employees treat you poorly, despite the fact that you’re doing nothing wrong. You have to learn to let it roll off your back, and remind yourself how much you’ve already saved, and that will keep you focused for the future.

I’m actually glad there are no coupons coming out this Sunday, so I can enjoy a weekend free of clipping and sorting. It’s nice to take a break once in a while. I advise anyone who reads this blog to do the same, and to keep your chin up if you have a bad day using coupons; it’s only for now, and by reminding yourself of that, you’ll be able to keep things positive and keep saving!

Have a great weekend!
